This week a customer in California sent us six pieces of Korean furniture. Three came from MH Mall (Modern House). Three came from SIDIZ. We checked every item with both stores and asked SIDIZ for the real box sizes. Then we got a FedEx quote. Here is what we found.

Does It Come in a Box?
This is the first question to ask. The vanity stool and the sliding mirror vanity and the adjustable desk from MH Mall are delivered by the store's own crew. The crew carries them into the home and sets them up. Nothing arrives at our warehouse in a box. So we cannot receive them or ship them overseas.
The SIDIZ LINIE office chair and FUNGUS stool and STEPO footrest are different. SIDIZ sends them boxed by courier. They reach our Seoul warehouse like any other parcel. These we can ship.
Before you fall in love with a piece check the delivery section of the product page. If it says the store delivers and installs it we cannot send it. If you are not sure send us the link. We check before you pay.
Why Box Size Matters More Than Weight
FedEx bills each box by the bigger of two numbers. One is the real weight. The other is the size weight. The size weight is the length times the width times the height in centimeters divided by 5,000. Furniture boxes are big and light. So the size weight wins every time.

The chair box weighs 19 kg. FedEx bills it like 58.7 kg. That is three times the real weight.
We usually offer Korea Post EMS as a cheaper option. These three boxes were over the EMS size limit. So FedEx was the only way to send them.
The Real Quote to California
Here are the two options we sent the customer. The product prices are the SIDIZ Korea prices that day.
Adding the chair raised shipping from about $544 to about $1,606. The chair alone added about $1,060 in shipping. That is far more than the chair itself. We told the customer that the stool and footrest are the better value if a chair can be found locally.
Bulky furniture costs more to deliver inside Korea. In this quote domestic shipping was $20 instead of the usual $2.50. It changes from store to store so we check it for every quote.
Which Furniture Is Worth Shipping
Small boxed pieces. Stools and footrests travel well. Their boxes stay small so the size weight stays low.
Korean crafts. A najeon jewelry chest in mother of pearl is furniture you cannot find in a US store. It also ships in a modest box. See the Crafts picks in Shop Korea.
Not worth it. Large office chairs and desks and vanities. Even when they come boxed the shipping often costs more than the furniture.
Thinking about a bigger order? Shipping is charged per box. Our fee drops to 10% from $300 and to 8% from $500. A box that adds clothes from Musinsa or skincare from Olive Young to a small piece of furniture spreads one shipping cost across more.

Can you ship furniture from Korea to the US?
Yes if it comes in a box. Chairs and stools and footrests from brands like SIDIZ arrive boxed and ship by FedEx. Furniture that the store delivers and installs at home cannot be sent because there is no box to receive.
Why does a chair cost so much to ship?
FedEx bills each box by the bigger of its real weight and its size weight. A SIDIZ LINIE chair box weighs about 19 kg but is billed like 58.7 kg because the box is large.
Can furniture go by Korea Post EMS?
The three SIDIZ boxes in this quote were over the EMS size limit. So FedEx was the only option. Smaller items such as a jewelry chest may fit. We check before we quote.
Which Korean furniture is worth shipping?
Small boxed pieces such as stools and footrests and najeon jewelry chests. Large chairs and desks often cost more to ship than to buy.
Do I pay US import duty on furniture?
US import duty is set by US customs when the box arrives. If any duty applies FedEx bills it to you at delivery.
